BSED ENGLISHThe Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) Major in English aims to develop highly motivated, inspiring, and competent teachers specializing in the content and pedagogy for secondary English education.
WHY PICK BSED-ENGLISH?
Becoming
an educator let you impart life lessons that your student will carry in their
journey. I choose to take up a bachelor of secondary education major in English
at the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos because this is my dream to be
a teacher, second this is my mother’s dream as well, and I want to be an agent
of change in our society.
Teaching is an honorable and difficult profession among any other professions. Being
a teacher is difficult, I have seen the struggles of my teachers in junior high
school. Inspired by them, that is why I said to myself that one day I will be
like her too. I want to be an educator like her who tough students about academics,
life skill learning, and values.
My mother once dreamed to be a professional, but too sad she did not reach her dream because my grandfather did not allow her to study in college. People before in their time, especially in rural areas, believe that women will just get married and will not give good fortune. When she went to Manila, she studied mass communication but stop after finishing her first year, because at that time she is working as a manager in Jag’s tailoring warehouse, and it is tiring enough for her. That is why my mother wants me to finish a degree and be a professional licensed teacher.
Being
a teacher allows you to teach life lessons that your students will remember
throughout their lives. I chose to pursue a bachelor of secondary education
with a major in English at UNO-R because it is both my dream and my mother's
dream to be a teacher, and I want to be one of the agents of change in our
society, by equipping my students with life skills.
My Learning and Best Practices in BSED-ENGLISH
Learning is continuous, as I journey on becoming an English teacher, I've experienced difficulties and sacrificed many things just for me to reach my dreams. Along this journey, I've learned that becoming a teacher is not just about teaching academic topics but also teaching values that the students must know and embody. Going to school, learning the things that a teacher must know, and embodying the virtues for us to be effective teachers are important just like the saying, "You can't give what you don't have". I've also learned that as a teacher you also need to be an effective communicator for you to deliver or express your ideas so that the listener and students will be able to understand what you mean. The English language is not just about being good at grammar and mastering the pronunciation of every English word, but it is a bridge that connects us to understand one another, it is our common ground.
The best practice that I've learned to live now is to learn to embrace your mistakes and learn from them so that the next time you encounter those circumstances you know the right approach to use. This implies that it is okay to commit mistakes as long as you learned from them and change your wrong perspectives. growth is continuous as well as learning.
